Polyphasic Sleep Journal
[Personal]
A couple of months ago I tried a polyphasic sleep cycle which involved sleeping for 20-30 minutes every 4 hours. (Found out about it on this page: Uberman's sleep schedule.) It didn't go so well. I had posted the log on my home page before and am just moving it to the weblog. Click-through for it.
polyphasic sleep journal...
Planned schedule: 20-30 minutes of sleep starting at 3am, 7am, 11am, 3pm,
7pm, and 11pm.
Day 0
- 30 April 2002 11:30am EDT
Woke up from the last long night of sleep I should have during the
course of this experiment. Slept at around 6am for a good 5-5.5
hours.
- 30 April 2002 3:30pm EDT
Skipped nap, not tired, feel fine.

Skipped nap, not tired, feel fine.
Day 1
- 1 May 2002 3:30am EDT
Didn't sleep much. Just lay in bed tossing and turning for about 20
minutes. Not too tired though, as I woke up around noon.
- 1 May 2002 7:30am EDT
Was getting pretty tired prior to my 'nap.' Though, I'd been working on
getting SourceForge configured and didn't really have any difficulties
in either cognition or recall.
Nap is in quotes because, again, I didn't really fall asleep; just tossed
and turned. I started to fall asleep just as my alarm rang and kind of
feel a bit like shit now: groggy, tired, and hungry. I'll eat some soup
now.
- 1 May 2002 11:30am EDT
Was tired, but not painfully so before the nap. Spent the last few
hours brainstorming and talking with Doug, which I think did reasonably
well. I don't think Doug could tell how little sleep I've had (though,
I've only been awake for 24 hours, which I've done plenty of times).
My nap went a little better, but I seriously feel like just staying in
my bed now. Didn't really start to fall asleep until the last few
minutes, but it felt good. I am exhausted.
- 1 May 2002 3:30pm EDT
Before my nap, I was quite awake, maybe because of the daylight. Spent
some time working and some time watching a movie. Again, I didn't fall
asleep immediately, but did halfway through the nap. It's becoming
harder and harder to get out of bed after each nap.
- 1 May 2002 4:00pm EDT
It is the hardest for the first 20 minutes after waking up from my nap.
I feel singularly awful, but after that first 20 minutes, it's not so
bad. So, as long as I'm disciplined about just getting myself out of bed
and staying out for that 20 minutes post-nap, I might be able to get
through this.
- 1 May 2002 7:50pm EDT
I was starting to feel a little better before my nap but 'overslept'
anyway. I wasn't really sleeping though. I think my cold is getting
worse and I may have to abort the experiment and try again when I
recover. Then again, I can't fall asleep anyway at this point, so I
might as well keep going. I'm feeling pretty awake now, except for
my cold. I took a vitamin pill.
Day 2
- 2 May 2002 1:30 am EDT
So, I purposely overslept my 11:00pm nap because I was feeling so
terrible from my cold. Just woke up. I had REM sleep! I automatically
woke up after my dream ended. I feel so much better. Maybe I will a less
strict version of the routine until I recover and try to wake up from
one REM cycle at a time and then stay awake for four hours.
- 2 May 2002 6:00 am EDT
Well, I pretty much missed by 3am nap because I can't fall asleep. My
throat is inflamed because of my cold, so the amount of mucus in my
throat and the inflammation keep causing my glottis to close just as I'm
about to fall asleep. So, just as I'm about to fall asleep, my glottis
closes, which wakes me up since I can no longer breathe, and I cough,
opening the glottis, and then try to fall asleep again, which then causes
my glottis to close again, ad nauseum. I think the same thing happens in
sleep apnea. I hope I don't have sleep apnea; I hope it's just the cold.
I'm feeling quite miserable at this point and just want to sleep, but
can't.
- 2 May 2002 8:00 am EDT
I missed another nap because I couldn't breathe. This pretty much sucks.
I just went out and bought some NyQuil. If that doesn't help, I'm going
to the doctor. This project is pretty much over. I am so miserable.
- 2 May 2002 8:00 pm EDT
Well, Nyquil is wonderful stuff. I slept for about 11.5 hours and felt
great afterwards. It wasn't the most restful sleep; woke up a number of
times in middle, but I feel great now. I'll take a shower, eat some
dinner, watch some television, take more Nyquil, and wake up tomorrow
again. I spent the last half hour cleaning out all of the demented shit
I did while sleep-deprived on seneca.omniscia.org, e.g. SourceForge.
